About Alvin Phua, Psy.D.,

Helping you discover the strength within yourself

Welcome to my practice!

I’m Dr. Alvin Phua [pua].  I am a licensed clinical psychologist dedicated to helping individuals navigate life’s challenges and achieve their fullest potential.  My mission is to provide compassionate, evidence-based therapy tailored to each individual’s unique needs.

Approach

My underlying attitude to therapy is to be respectful, patient, benevolent, empathic, and curious.  My psychotherapy approach draws from psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, systems perspectives, and evidence-based research, tailoring my treatments to the individual needs of each person. I often provide practical tools for my clients to alleviate some of the symptoms during the first phase of therapy. When they are ready, we dive in deeper and work on healing from the “inside out” creating long-lasting therapeutic changes.

Background

I am originally from the island nation of Singapore and came to the US as an international student.  After college, I worked for a non-profit Christian organization, Bridges International (Cru), where I mentored college students for more than 15 years. Currently, I hold a part-time position and work as a coach to staff and student leaders.  I earned a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fuller Graduate School of Psychology, and I am a licensed clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  I am also an assistant professor at Divine Mercy University in Sterling, Virginia.  I reside in northern Virginia with my wife and two children.  We enjoy spending time with family and friends, being out in nature, and traveling.
