Alvin Phua, Psy.D.,

Licensed Clinical Psychologist

Helping you discover the strength within yourself

Welcome to my practice!

I’m Dr. Alvin Phua (pronounced as PUA), a licensed psychologist dedicated to helping individuals navigate life’s challenges and achieve their fullest potential.  My mission is to provide compassionate, evidence-based therapy tailored to each individual’s unique needs.

My approach

My underlying attitude to therapy is to be respectful, patient, benevolent, empathic, and curious.  My psychotherapy approach draws from psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, systems perspectives, and evidence-based research, tailoring my treatments to the individual needs of each person. I often provide practical tools for my clients to alleviate some of the symptoms during the first phase of therapy. When they are ready, we dive in deeper and work on healing from the “inside out” creating long-lasting therapeutic changes.

My philosophy

I see therapy as a journey inward. Travelers are often anxious especially if they are about to embark on a new journey, on a new vessel. Travelers can relax to some extent if they are in a safe and sturdy vehicle with a captain who shows himself to be confident and qualified.

Similarly, as a therapist, I aim to provide a safe and secure environment for travel. Many people who come to me have felt hurt and betrayed early in life and find it hard to trust easily, if at all. The unique therapeutic relationship between me and my clients provides new opportunities for trust and growth.

My background

I am originally from the island nation of Singapore and came to the US as an international student.  After graduating from college, I joined a non-profit Christian organization, Bridges International (Cru), where I mentored college students for more than 15 years. Currently, I hold a part-time position and work as a coach to staff and student leaders.  I earned a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fuller Graduate School of Psychology, and I am a licensed clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia.    I reside in northern Virginia with my wife and two children.  We enjoy spending time with family and friends, being out in nature and traveling.
