Adult Psychotherapy Integrating the Christian Faith

Something has you feeling stuck.

We all encounter challenges and difficulties in life. However, there may be times when life is so overwhelming that it seems out of control. You have tried your best to manage, but it may feel as though no matter how hard you try, things just don’t improve. Perhaps you struggle with finding fulfillment in your close relationships.  Or you long to overcome bad habits.  Maybe you feel overwhelmed, stressed, and disoriented.  All of these can feel daunting but it can also be an opportunity for growth and positive change.  Life’s challenges can weight heavy, but you don’t have to carry them alone.

Hi, I'm Dr. Alvin Phua.

I am here to help you.  I am a licensed clinical psychologist in Virginia and I provide in-person individual adult psychotherapy in Sterling, Virginia.  I offer virtual therapy sessions across Virginia and all PSYPACT participating states.  I have extensive training and experiences in the integration of psychotherapy and the Christian faith, helping my clients grow holistically- mind, body, and spirit.

I strive to provide a safe environment to my clients and I work with them to set the pace of their therapeutic progress.  I believe there are many approaches to a problem and value collaborating with my clients to figure out what works best for them.  I use a variety of approaches including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and short-term therapy.

My clients feel safe to openly share their struggles, reflect on their past experiences, find solutions to the issues they experience, and find new meaning and hope in life.

Services and Specialties

I have extensive training and experiences in the integration of psychology and the Christian faith.  Additionally, my specialties include adult ADHD, Asians and Asian Americans, men’s issues, and young adults.

Religious and spiritual values are often essential parts of human life and important resources in therapy. Clients often experience greater life satisfaction when their spiritual needs are acknowledged and integrated into therapy.  With more than 20 years of experience as a minister and counselor, I can help you heal, grow, and experience freedom in your life.  Read more here.

Attention-deficit/hyperactive disorder (ADHD) can have debilitating effects to those who have it. ADHD can affect various aspects of life, including school, work, relationships, and self-esteem. Many adults with ADHD have suffered years of feeling demoralized and discouraged due to a long-lasting history of frustration, failures, and underachievement. I help my clients understand and manage their ADHD and instill hope, optimism, and motivation within them.  Read more here.

Many from the Asian and Asian American population struggle with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. They may also experience generational trauma, guilt, stresses as a minority, or acculturation issues. I specialize in culturally competent care and help my clients work through their struggles.  You can experience peace and joy in life and your relationships.  Read more here.

Young Adults/ College Students often face a variety of challenges as they transition from adolescence to full-fledged adulthood.  People in this age group often are learning how to be independent and are making many important life decisions. With many years of experience working with young adults, I can be your guide to support you through this pivotal time in your life.  Read more here.

Men are generally less likely to seek mental health care compared to women due to reasons such as the traditional social norms of what it means to be a “real man.”  However, psychotherapy can help men lead healthier, more fulfilling lives by addressing mental health issues, improving relationships, and building resilience.  I can help you get there.  Read more here.

How do I get started?

Step 1.

Reach out to set up a 15-min free phone consultation where I will hear about some of your concerns and answer any questions you may have about therapy. If we both feel that we are a good fit, we can then schedule an initial therapy appointment.

Step 2.

Before the start of the first session, some basic paperwork needs to be filled out.  If we are meeting online, I will send you the telehealth video link and information you need to log in to our secure HIPPA-compliant portal.  You will need a good internet connection and a safe and confidential place for therapy.

Step 3.

Let’s get to work!
